THANK YOU FROM RANDOM

Our 2012 Relay season is now history.

Once again our team excelled in our events and donations we brought in. We did not meet our goal of 1 million lindens however we shattered our goal with online donations this year!  Our total we raised is at 775,000. lindens! Our online donations totaled $875.00 or 218,750 lindens!  Amazing!

Relay for Life of Second Life generated $346,334!   All from nickels and dimes.

I was so proud this year at the participation level of our team.  Several of you took upon yourself to hold events all over the grid.  From our jail and bail to the little car races your participation made our events stand out among the relaying community.  What fun we had!

Red Laurent and Beau Buccaneer held some great events at their club.  They also brought some new teammates for us!  Jenny Snakeankle Dj'd at several clubs on behalf of her mother.  Fiz Underwood, Mikael Foxtrot, Portia Lytton, Arioch Snowpaw, Tee Auster, Dianna Wycliffe all gave of their time to DJ or Host at all team events.

Our challenges at *The Club* were awesome this year. Thank you to the Club Staff and team members who were willing to look stupid for a great cause. Thank you to all of you who took part in planning, building and hosting of our events!  That is exactly what makes our team great!

Our actual Relay was amazing this year. I could not of pictured a better campsite than Times Square!  Thank you Dani for the great idea and TS for coming up with the sign idea to honor those we have lost. Thank you to Tee for the cancer time line research.  Thank you to Arioch for your scripting abilities!! We couldn't of done it without you.Thank you to To Portia for putting together the hunt. Last but not least a special thank you to Julia Zhangsun! The time you put into each storefront and signs was appreciated. We are so happy you joined our team!

Our campsite came in 2nd place for Best Themed campsite and 1st place in Cancer Education. WOOT   It was a memorable weekend for sure!!!

I want to thank our team’s co captains. Dianna Wycliffe and TS Darrow for being awesome, being at every event and for putting up with me.  To Tee for your talent in taking on the Harmony of Hope web sight.

Finally, I'd like to close with Fiz Underwood’s story.  For the last few years Fiz would support Relay with a donation but did not really take part in our team events.  Last year at Relay he heard, saw and felt the power of Relay.  At the beginning of his year his words were " I FINALLY GET IT." Take one minute to sit back and smile. You GET IT!

Because of you we are closer to a cure for cancer!  Because of you we will see a cure in our lifetime!  Those you relay for are smiling because of you!

Thank you for all you did!

Why Random Relays

By Random Padar

I am a fortunate one.  I do not have cancer in my family history. My parents nor siblings have died from cancer.

My second year in SL I fell in love with a man who was a caregiver for his mother.  I was introduced to RFL and decided this is the one thing I can DO to support him and his mother.

My first year of Relay left a huge impact on me. The testimonies of those fighting this terrible disease, the passion to find a cure, the emotional stories of survival and loss has made me even more determined to fight this battle along side my partner and friends.

This is my 5th year as captain of Harmony of Hope.

In one very short year 2011-2012 I have had several very close friends diagnosed with cancer. Just recently my closest friend was diagnosed with breast cancer which has spread. She is in for a battle.  I on the other hand can fight for her.  I can fight for all of you.

My very first year of Relay left a huge impression on me.  The testimonies of those fighting this terrible disease, the passion to find a cure, the emotional stories of survival and loss has made me even more determined to fight this battle along side my partner and friends. I will continue to work and  do the best I can to help bring an end to this cancer.

It is Time For a Cure!

WHY I RELAY by Dianna Wycliffe

When I was a little girl, my grandmother got cancer. I heard the words, but  I didn't know what it meant. The adults whispered around us kids. All I knew was my Nana was very sick, and soon after she died. I knew Cancer was bad, Cancer kills and it took my Nana from me.

A few years later, my uncle got very sick and died, I told my younger cousin, it's cancer, it took our Nana too. She cried for her Daddy and I cried for my Uncle. Still not knowing what it meant.

Several more years later my other uncle was diagnosed with Leukemia, what's that I asked as a teenager. I was told, it too is cancer. Cancer was wiping out my family! I had to know more and do something! But what I asked myself.

When I was 23 my beloved grandfather was also diagnosed with Cancer, from a job he worked at when my mother was a little girl. AGAIN, here comes cancer!  It was 1990, what could I do?

Today, I'm 45 and lost my mother April 4th of cancer. I relay for my Mom, My grandparents, my Uncles, I relay for my children, I relay for myself, I relay for YOU! I relay so a little girl doesn't have to grow up with that word stuck in her head while her family dies from it,

IT'S TIME FOR A CURE!
LETS BEAT IT, IT WE CAN DO IT!

"Why I Relay" by Jenny Snakeankle

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I'm following the God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that place at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah, yes these things I will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Life up your hearts and share with me,
God wanted me now, "He set me free."

From Jenny...
"My Mom passed March 20th this year from lung cancer. She was a cornea donor through the Lions Club.  They send packets once a month and this poem was in the grieving section of the newsletter."

"Why I Relay" by DJ Guy

WHY I RELAY
As a youngster, I feel as if I often see the eyes through tinted glasses, and I take things for granted that nobody should; life, family, friends. Just as much as the next person, however, I know how it feels to have these things torn away from me. Cancer is something I see effecting people around me, day in, day out. Currently one of my close friends has just found out his mother has cancer, and I can see how much he is hurt, worried and upset.
Despite all this, my main reason to relay is the loss of one of the greatest women I have ever met in my life, Sue S. At the age of 8, Sue came into my life. She was my mentor, working with me to iron out my problems as a youngster, to deal with the stress of home, the school, on a personal and judgement free level. On a near daily basis we would work on the next issue, and the next, but yet she never gave up, she never lost faith.
At the time I was too young to understand, at around the age of 9 and a half she started being in school less and less often. “She’s not well at the moment” they would say, trying not to alarm myself and her other “students”. She never let up her smile though, and back and forth she came, always seeming on top of the world, like nothing could stop her. Then, out of the blue, she was no longer there.
For an extended period of time she was out of school, and I had no chance to see her, but yet she still managed to find the time to write letters back and forth. She was fine she said, feeling great, and she’d be better soon. Once again, not knowing better, everything seemed as if it was going to be fine, and then she returned. This was the time she was receiving her treatment.
Back again, words cannot describe the feeling I felt that day, finally been able to speak to her and give her a hug again, but then I noticed something. Miss, I said, where's your hair? She assured me it was nothing, it was normal and the doctors had made her better. For around 6 more months she seem’d as if everything was ok, she was fine.
I left the school at the age of 11 to head off to high school, but yet we still exchanged letters back and forth, she was still there for me, despite the fact I was no longer her responsibility, still helping me sort my problems. Then came the day I’d been told she had fallen ill once again, but of course this time I understood far more what was really going on. She had breast cancer, and it was not looking good.
A few weeks after, I popped back into my old school to see all the old staff, everyone seemed as if something was wrong. I knew at that moment, Sue S had passed away to cancer, and at that point I realised what a destructive force it really can be.

This is why I relay, because I want to know that people like Sue don’t have to be taken away from us unfairly before their time, and so no adult or child has to experience the pain and heartbreak of finding out someone who means the world to you was gone, forever.
